Obituary

A Memorial service for Al Davis, 66, of Marshall will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2014 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rusty Rustenhaven officiating. Al Davis was born on January 23, 1948 in Dallas, TX to Tom and Marsiliet Davis of Seagoville, TX. He grew up on the Davis family farm, where he learned to fix tractors, wake up early, and feel most at home in peaceful, rural America. At Seagoville High School, he was a Friday-night superstar, switching from his football pads to his band uniform at halftime, then back again to finish the game. He graduated from high school in 1966, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Texas Tech and a J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He established a successful and lucrative private law practice in Kermit, Texas, but realized that money isn't everything when he met Dr. Jane Ogden, his future wife. The couple married on August 14, 1982, and moved to Marshall in 1985. With their two sons, they made a home in East Texas. Al spent his days practicing law, his nights playing the guitar and harmonica, and his weekends volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and singing bass in the choir at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He loved fishing the Piedra and San Juan Rivers in Colorado, playing music with his friends in downtown Marshall, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. Having survived two hearts attacks caused in part by his long-time smoking habit, he died in his home late Saturday night, November 29, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his sons, Lucas and Joshua; and his sisters, Janie Davis Lusher of Bett, MS and Dr. Nan Rentz of Waco. He was a wonderful man, and the mark he left on his family, friends, and community cannot be summed up in these few words. In lieu of flowers, stop smoking. Donations in Al's honor to Habitat for Humanity of Marshall or the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Marshall would also be an appropriate remembrance.
