Jan 17, 1941 — Feb 12, 2019
A funeral service for Alton J. Oney, 78, of Marshall will be held at 10:00a.m., Friday, February 15, 2019 in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home with Jack Dillard and Bro. Craig Evers officiating. Visitation with family and friends will take place Thursday, February 14, 2019 from 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. at Downs Funeral Home. Alton passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at his home with his loving family by his side.
Alton J. Oney was born January 17, 1941 to A.M. Oney and Phoebe Nowling Oney. Alton was a lifelong resident of Marshall where he attended school, owned businesses, and raised his family. At a young age, Alton joined the United States Army where he served our Country with honor and pride. After an honorable discharge Alton returned home to Marshall and began his own business, A & A Lumber Company. Alton chose the name A & A, not because those initials were personal to him, but because they allowed his business to show up first in the phone book. For 32 years, Alton provided the residents of Harrison County with all their hardware supplies. In addition to the hardware store, Alton also enjoyed farming and ranching. He owned and operated Double O Charolais from 1979 – 2017. While Alton will be remembered in the community for his businesses, the best memories of Alton are those of his family. Alton enjoyed spending time with his family and loved them all dearly. One of his biggest joys came from riding his grandchildren around the family farm on his tractor. Alton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving Alton is his loving wife of 57 years, Wilma Oney; five children and their spouses, Mike Oney and wife, Gretchen; David Oney; Micheal Phillips and wife, Teresa; Cindy Forbes and husband, Jack; and Johnny Oney; brother, Alvin Oney and wife, Pat; sister, Shirley George and husband, Carl; sister-in-law, Sandra Oney; grandchildren, Kyndall Dake and spouse, Shajuna, Jay Oney and spouse, Haley, Kyle Phillips and spouse, Chelsea, Bo Ford and spouse, Tiffany, Justin Oney, Emily Smith and Ian Terry, Kolton Phillips and Megan, Cody Forbes, Kyleigh Lopez and spouse, Francisco, Kolby Phillips, Liz Oney, Ashley Forbes, and Warren Stanford; great-grandchildren, Izayah Phillips, Jaycee Oney, Hayden Ricks, Lindley Oney, Drake Phillips, Kellan Oney, Blake Terry, Ryleigh Phillips, Emory Phillips, Zoie, Gracie, Bo, and Ricky Ford; special niece who was like a daughter, Lauri Anne Gibson; and special friend and longtime employee, Eloy. Alton is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.
