Funeral services for Bertha Inez Fogle Hayden, 87, of Gill Community are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Friendship Baptist Church. Dr. Wallace Watkins of Central Baptist Church will officiate with support from Bro. Matt Paul, pastor of Friendship Baptist Church. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home in Marshall, Texas. Mrs. Hayden passed away Thursday morning, April 25, 2013 at the Holmgreen Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born January 15, 1926 to Daniel Ward Fogle and Mable Woods Fogle in Gill Community, Harrison County, Texas where her father and mother worked a family farm for their entire lives. Bert, as she would be called in later years, became a Christian during a fall revival meeting at Friendship Baptist Church in 1934. Bertha won her first awards in 4-H, and was the first Gold Star Girl in Harrison County in 1941-42. She was educated in Gill Community schools, and graduated from Marshall Hight School in 1943. After high school, she served as the first church secretary for the newly organized Central Baptist Church of Marshall. With time and good recommendations from Reverend Dingler, Bert made her way to Baylor University and met a young man who had grown up 15 miles from her in Carthage, Texas. Glenn W. Hayden was headed for the ministry and they both committed their lives to this effort. Glenn and Bert were married in 1946 by Rev. O.H. Dingler at Central Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas. They raised four sons to be productive members of their respective communities. Glenn served as a Baptist minister for 52 years in Northeast Texas, and Bert was by his side for the entire journey. She completed her education at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, became a sixth grade math teacher and ultimately served in this capacity in communities where Glenn served in the local church. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma for over 25 years. During this period, when Glenn retired from the ministry, Bert moved him to the home place in Gill community where they built the first house they had ever owned. Bert spent these years working for E.T.B.U. in the Music Department's Listening Lab, while Glenn was finding that retirement for ministers did not slow their continuing profession. After losing Glenn in 1998, Bert came full circle to become a member of Central Baptist Church again and was active in her Sunday School Class there. Membership in this class became one of the most memorable times of her life. The family wishes to thank the class members for their loving prayers and support over the last years of Bert's physical decline. Bertha Hayden, indeed, lived a superb life and was most certainly a blessed woman. Bert was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Wood Hayden, son Ronald Wood Hayden, father Daniel Ward Fogle, mother Mable Woods Fogle, sister Nancy Fogle King, sister-in-law Patricia Taylor Fogle, brother Dan Fogle,Jr., sister-in-law Peggy Fogle and most recently brother-in-law Lavoyia Moore. Bert is survived by sons David (Myra) Hayden, Stephen (Juanita) Hayden, Jonathan (Rhonda) Hayden, sister Margie Moore, brother Sam (Sheryl) Fogle, brother-in-law Roy King, sister-in-law Charlcie Willis and numerous nieces and nephews. Gram, as she was know to her grandchildren, is survived by Jerusha Hayden (John) Elliott, Jessica Hayden (Robert) Webster III, Jordan Hayden (Roland) Rios, Stephen (Danelle) Hayden, Preston Marcus Hayden and Sandra Hayden (Mark) Pepin; great grandchildren Taylor Austin Elliott, Blayke Everett Elliott, Bailey Marie Elliott, and most recently Alysse Elizabeth Rios and Adelaide Tuttle Pepin.
