Obituary

Betty Lou Cox Hughes was born December 5, 1929, in Beaumont, TX to William and Ada Cox. On September 2, 1949, she married J.C. Hughes, Sr. in Beaumont, TX, and they were seldom apart until his passing in March of 2009. She was a devoted wife, mother, and best friend to all, Christian in all her thoughts and deeds. Simply "Betty" as everyone called her, was never one to complain and never had a harsh word to say about anyone. Her grandkids and great-grandkids knew her as "Grams" and their very presence brought a smile to her face that was a big as the Texas sky; they made her life complete. Mrs. Hughes, age 82, of Marshall, TX passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, in Marshall after a short illness. She worked as a government line inspector at Louisiana Ordinance Plant in Minden, LA, and at Thiokol Ammunition Plant in Karnack, TX for over thirty years. "Betty" also worked side-by-side with her husband J.C. Sr. in his Commercial Display business, especially during Christmas each year when they both worked two jobs. It did not matter the job or time, she was always next to her husband in every chore. She was best known for her kind heart, beautiful smile, and her colorful hats. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, J.C. Hughes Jr. and wife Beverly Hughes of Marshall and William Hughes and wife Melanie Hughes of Marshall; daughter Pat Flanagan and husband M.D. Flanagan Jr. of Marshall; four grandchildren, Dwight (Trey) Neal Mays III and his wife Sarah of Marshall, Jacob (Jake) Cameron Hughes of Kyle, TX, Brandy Ayers and Husband Alvin of Oak Harbor, WA, and Melissa Beecham and husband Phillip of Marshall; five great-grandchildren, James Neal Mays, Bryan Ayers, Wyatt Ayers, Jaxon Ayers, and Sophia Beecham; and her sister Johnny Raye Wilson of Vidor, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty Hughes was preceded in death by husband J.C. Hughes Sr., one sister Mary Holt, one brother William Cox Jr. and her parents William Sr. and Ada Cox, and two grandchildren Chris and Joey Hughes. Blessed are those who touch the hearts of others - Betty Hughes was blessed. nspector at Louisiana Ordinance Plant in Minden, LA
