Obituary

A memorial service for Cary Lee Workman, 83, of Marshall, Texas will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel.

Cary was born on August 27, 1942, in Marshall, Texas to Jewel Lee Workman and Mildred Williams Workman and passed away on June 19, 2026, in Marshall, Texas.

His true passions were the Lord, his family, and sports (in that order).  He met the love of his life, Laurel Starr, at Sam Houston State University and they were married in Orange, Texas on August 25, 1964. While attending Sam Houston, he was a pitcher for the baseball team that won the NAIA National Championship in 1963.  He joined his father in his electrical business in 1967 and grew the company until retirement in 2015. He enjoyed working and serving in the community and helping families in need. His hobbies included running, biking, and hiking in his later years. Climbing to the summit at Wheeler Peak in New Mexico was the highlight. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Marshall for decades and went on several mission trips with the Texas Baptist Men for disaster relief and with International Missions to Mexico and Ukraine. He committed large amounts of scripture to memory and personally shared the gospel to countless friends, family, and strangers alike. He was a doting and committed "Grandaddy" who would not miss any game, performance, recital or trip for his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Mildred Workman; son, Brian Workman and sister, Martha Ann Workman Raabe.

He is survived by his wife, Laurel Workman of Marshall, Texas; children, Jason Scott Workman (Glenna) of Hallsville, Texas and Jennifer Workman Birss (Andy) of Longview, Texas; grandchildren, Meadow Leigh Workman, August Moore Workman and Van Alex Workman all of Hallsville, Texas and sister-in-law, Margaret Rackler (John) of San Antonio, Texas along with many beloved nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

A special thank you to the staff of Marshall Manor, Marshall Hospice and special caregiver, Danielle Thomas for their compassion and care.
