In loving memory of Charles (Chuck) Burgett Born: April 29, 1954 Died: July 22, 2012 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck Burgett was born April 29, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in central Illinois, the youngest of three children of Gene and Helen Burgett. His father was an engineer, who owned a construction company specializing in bridge-building. His mother assisted with the record-keeping for the business when she wasn't otherwise absorbed in his full-time care and keeping him out of trouble. He began playing golf early, earning his first trophy when he was only five years old. He lettered in golf in both his junior and senior years of high school. He also learned the joys of fishing as a child. Chuck attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in engineering. He was lured from the frozen north to Texas for a job early in his career - and never looked back. Texas became home to him. He eventually became owner and president of C. Burgett and Associates Inc., a metal fabrication business in Scottsville. Chuck continued his love of golf and joined the Oaklawn Golf Club. He also was an avid bass fisherman. He enjoyed gardening, and even grew the grapes for his wine-making. Chuck also enjoyed grilling out and other chef duties. Another of his joys was a dark blue Thunderbird that he and his wife, Denise (who died just over two years ago) enjoyed buzzing around in. He also loved his cats, particularly Rocky, Bubba and Gizmo. The past three years were difficult for him as his health deteriorated, but were eased by the many caring people who helped in big and small ways with his personal care and keeping his spirits uplifted during his long battle with cancer. He died on Sunday morning, July 22, 2012, at Summer Meadows Nursing Home in Longview, Texas. He will be buried in Yates Cemetery, as he wanted, near his good friend and mentor, Ed Baker.
