Donald Glenn Holt, "Don", was born in Marthaville, LA on February 9, 1931, the seventh of nine children born to Melvin and Nancy (Nannie) Crow Holt. He died in Marshall, TX on December 10, 2014, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Elsie Vela Holt, four children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Of Don's family, he is survived by a sister-in-law; Elizabeth Jones Holt, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Don grew up in a family of strong faith, anchored by their active participation in the Methodist church, Bible study, and prayer. His parents set an example by personally trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, actively seeking His will, and respecting each person they met as someone created by God. His parents were loving parents who called their children to love and care for each other. Don's parents' faith in Jesus was tested as three brothers passed away during their childhood years. His mother responded with long hours of personal prayer, Bible reading, and deep love for her family. Don did not want to stay in the north Louisiana area where he grew up, and so enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for 28 years. During those years he pursued higher education, accumulating over 100 college credits and completing many technical courses. He retired as a Non-Commissioned Officer in 1974. Don subsequently worked in Commercial Aviation for several years, finally retiring from Alaska Airlines in Washington state. He then spent a year volunteering with a local Southern Baptist association before moving to Marshall, TX to be near widowed sisters and their families. Don married Elsie Joan Vela of Triumph, LA on September 28, 1951 in Natchitoches, LA. Over the next sixty-three years they raised four children: Frances Porter, Donald Holt Jr., David Holt, and Merry Bush. As Don was transferred from Air Force base to Air Force base, the family followed the example set by his parents and immediately found a local Baptist church where they worshiped and served Jesus Christ. Over the years Don sang in church choirs, lead church music, was ordained as a deacon, and subsequently licensed as a lay preacher. All four children and their families share a faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Don lived in Marshall, TX for nineteen years. He invested his life in his family: wife, sister, sister-in-law and niece. He served on The Arc of Harrison County's Board of Directors, serving terms as President and as Treasurer. He also served Woodlawn Baptist Church as a deacon, Sunday School and Church Training teacher, choir member, music director, and active church member. Don served as an active Gideon and led the local camp.
