Obituary

Doyle Wayne Curry, affectionately known as "Daddy Doyle" to his grandchildren and to many who loved him like family, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on January 3, 1937, in Mexia, Texas, to John David Curry and Lucille Fife Curry.

At the age of 19, Doyle married the love of his life, Ann (known as Boom Boom), and the two shared 53 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2009. Their love was steady, enduring, and deeply rooted in friendship and respect—a foundation for the family they built together.

Doyle grew up with his older brother, James, and later became an older brother to Sandy and Ralph, after his father remarried. He practically lived on the airport in Mexia. The family's crop-dusting business introduced him to aviation, sparking a lifelong passion for flying. He first soloed at age 13 and earned his pilot's license at 16. He worked many jobs to pay his way through college, first at Navarro College and ultimately graduating from The University of Texas in 1962. He also served in the United States Navy Reserves. After his graduation, Doyle and Ann made their home in Marshall, Texas, where he began what would become a highly respected and influential legal career. He initially practiced criminal defense law before joining Jones & Baldwin in 1967. As a trial attorney for well over 50 years, focusing mainly on personal injury, Doyle was known for his sharp mind, honesty, commanding presence, and unwavering commitment to justice. He became a trusted advisor to many, both inside and outside the courtroom. Doyle's exceptional skill and ethical conduct as an advocate for his clients was recognized by his state-wide election as President of the Texas Trial Lawyers in 1988, and he was selected for membership in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation only national organization considered to represent the top 1% of the lawyers within their state. He was also a founding member of the East Texas chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the East Texas Trial Lawyers.

While his professional accomplishments were many, Doyle's proudest role was that of a devoted father, grandfather and mentor. He was a fiercely loyal man full of wit, charm, conviction, and quiet kindness. He enjoyed "Boogie Woogie" music, good home cooking, (especially buttermilk pie), traveling, flying, reading, bird watching, hunting, classic movies, football, the Texas Longhorns, good bourbon, and any interesting conversation—which almost always led to a story you'd remember or a life lesson you didn't know you needed. He was a man of strong principles and quiet faith, never really the type to need the spotlight, but always someone you'd want in your corner. He had a rare gift: the ability to make people feel heard, understood, and deeply supported. Whether offering sound advice, a listening ear, or just a steady presence, Doyle was a source of guidance to many—friends, family, colleagues, and clients alike. You always knew where you stood with him, and you never doubted that he cared. You could always see that in his eyes and in his smile. Daddy Doyle was often referred to as the "glue" that held his entire family together, the one any of them would do just about anything for. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Doyle were truly blessed beyond measure.

Doyle is survived by his daughters Darla Haynes and Cheryl Turcotte and son-in law, Dick Haynes, grandchildren Heather Courtney and husband Chris, Starr Minatrea and husband Russell, Pierce Turcotte and Joseph Turcotte, Lee Haynes and wife Anna, and Kenlee Courtney; and great-grandchildren Jolie Preston and husband Donaven, Sawyer Whaley, Dylan, Kennedy and Sutton Minatrea, and one very special great, great granddaughter, Poppy Preston; brother Sandy Curry, sister in law Sally Beene and husband Dan, nephew Chris Curry, nieces Stephanie Beene, Angie Beene, Jamie Hawthorn and several great nieces and nephews. Doyle also had several very close friends who were like family, particularly those who celebrated their weekly dinners, Brad Morin, Carl Roth, Travis Keeney and the late Bill Lewis. He shared a tight bond with his son in law, Dick, who always made sure to side with him in his shenanigans, usually involving making sure Doyle got whatever homecooked meal his heart desired or pulling one over on one of the rest of the family members.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, June 30 at 10:00 AM, at Down's Funeral Home, 4608 Elysian Fields Rd. Marshall, TX 75672, where friends and loved ones are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well lived and a man deeply loved. Doyle's ashes will be placed in a special handcrafted urn lovingly designed and created by his grandson in law, Russell, and will be placed to rest alongside his wife Ann.
