Obituary

Emem Okon Umoh was born to Prince Okon Umoumoh of Ekown's family in Ikot Mbon Ikono in Uyo Local Government Area and Idara Okon Umoumoh (Nee Rosa Phillip Obot) from Ikot Afaha Eket in Eket Local Government Area all in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria on April 21, 1954. Emem had the best of care as a child until 1966 when he lost his father just as he was to start high school. Emem was the first born child/son among two boys and two girls. Emem's high school education was affected by the Nigerian Civil War, but through providence he came out tops from Union Secondary School in 1970 and enrolled into The Nigerian Defense Academy's 22nd Regular Course, and passed out in 1974 as a Lieutenant with a sword of honor as "BEST CADET OFFICER". He came out as best overall officer, and his scores in Geography and Map Reading was the best in the history of the Academy. He was mandatorily drafted into the Navy instead of the Army he chose. As his fate was so twisted, he was sent on a MARINE Engineering Course in UK along with other African Countries participating in the program, and again Emem passed out as the "BEST COMMONWEALTH OFFICER" with a medal to show for it. On return to Nigeria, the Military identified in the young officer a leadership potential and so sent him again to India for Commanding Officers Training Course which he successfully completed and on return was posted to war ships to hold critical positions as OFFICER-IN-CHARGE: ENGINEERING, ARMOURY, LOGISTICS & TRAINING respectively. His last command position was COMMANDER, TIN CAN ISLAND PORT before his retirement arising from a military coup. Emem was born into a strict Christian family, and it was not surprising that he was ordained a Pastor so early in life in Mount Zion Lighthouse Full Gospel Church by Bishop Etukidem. On arrival in the United States, Emem was so recognized as he Pastored the following churches: 1. Scott Memorial CME Church, Overton, Texas, 2. St. Luke's CME Church, Longview, Texas, and 3. St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Marshall, Texas (Assistant Pastor). With his technical/engineering background, it was not difficult for Emem to be found suitable sooner than expected, and was employed as Technical/engineering Foreman and later Supervisor as Transet Construction Company - involved in schools, universities, roads and hospitals. As the company relocated out of Texas, Emem took a few certification courses and was registered by the City of Longview Administration as a Construction Contractor certified to remodel homes, gas stations, etc. As luck always trailed his path, Emem remodeled the home of a Senior Manager of Dana Company (specializing in the production of steel frames for SUVs), and his dexterity earned him a job as Technical Assistant in Dana Corporation in Longview, Texas, and later as Technical Superintendent for years before ill health took the best out of him. He had to voluntarily resign to face his health challenge. Even with his health challenge, Emem continued to minister on Sundays and teach during Bible studies in church into the very week he passed on. Emem was first married to Ms. Cecilia Michael Eyo, and between them had five children, four of which are alive today. On arrival in the US after many years of sojourning in the US, Emem got married on February 6, 2010 to Ms. Sharron Jones in Marshall, Texas. Emem took ill in 2008, and was diagnosed with complicated kidney and bronchial deficiencies. Months later he was recommended to undergo dialysis which became a recurring decimal that increased from twice a week, to thrice a week and lately to a daily routine resulting in his under going several by-pass surgeries and severe pains under his foot as a result of loss of blood which was why he was admitted for yet another surgery which he couldn't come out from. While in the hospital he still was strong enough to say he would make it and proposed his home going to see his children and family members, but God called Emem over on August 20, 2013 at His own time. Left to mourn Emem are his family members and friends from the United States and Nigeria who cannot be all listed but are represented as follows: Survivors from the United States are: his wife, Mrs. Sharron Emem Umoh, Mireckle Jones, Eddie Silas, Kenya Eles, Idara Umoh, and Favour Paul Emem Umoh.
