Marshall

Obituary

Ernest E. Marshall, of Marshall, TX, entered the gates of Heaven after 102 years on this earth on May 14, 2021.  He was born August 26, 1918 in Columbus, TX to James B. Marshall and Eunice Stover Marshall.  He was a loyal member of Friendship Baptist Church, Marshall, TX where he served as a Deacon for 60 years.  Mr. Marshall was survived by his daughter, Carol Marshall New (Jerry) of Marshall; son, Ernie Marshall (Cathy) of Marshall; grandchildren, Natalie New Inman (Bert) of Boerne, TX, Carrie New Hammack (Todd) of Marshall, Jeremy New of Marshall, Jeff Marshall (Brenna) of Burke, Virginia, Janna Marshall Ellenburg (Joseph) of Marshall, Jonathan Marshall (Laura) of Bonn, Germany; great-grandchildren, Georgia and Campbell Inman; Fisher, Spencer and Sealey Hammack; Griffin and Maggie Marshall; Emily and Caitlyn Ellenburg; and Mackenzie Marshall; and a host of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam Sealey Marshall, his son Mark Edward Marshall, his brothers: Bennett and Dick, Sisters: Paulene, Dorothy, Narcille and Mary.

Ernest graduated from Baylor University with a finance degree in 1941.  He attended Baylor on scholarship playing football, basketball and baseball.  Ernest married Miriam Sealey of Marshall, TX in May of 1942 while stationed at Camp Swift.

Ernest was a servant leader and had a love of the community in many ways.  During World War II, he served in the Army from 1941 until 1945, where his last position was Finance Officer at the Headquarters of the 8th Services Command.  Until his death, he was the oldest living WWII veteran in Harrison County.  Captain Marshall leaves a lasting legacy of honorable military service followed by generations of his family, including his son, son in law, grandson, and future service by his great-granddaughter and great-grandson upon their graduation from college.  After being discharged from the Army in 1945, they moved to Marshall to start a cattle ranch and raise registered Polled Herford Cattle.  He lived on that ranch for the next 73 years.  He was a member of the Marshall Independent School Board for 25 years serving as the Vice President and President; he was a member of the Board of the Texas Association of School Boards, he served 20 years on the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service Board.  Ernest and his wife Miriam cared for their son, Mark, who was injured in an accident at age 12, for 40 years.  They almost never missed taking Mark to a Marshall High School football game.  One of his fondest memories was coaching the 1963 Babe Ruth All-star team who won the State Champions in Austin, TX.  Coach Marshall and the members of that team stayed in close contact for the last 58 years.  He was also an avid sports fan of his beloved Baylor Bears, Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys.  He also loved watching all of his "kids" sporting events.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Marshall, Jeremy New, Bert Inman, Todd Hammack, Joseph Ellenburg and Dennis Parker.  Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Marshall, Gary Curbey, Buddy Fults, Members of the 1963 Babe Ruth All-Star State Championship Team, Bob Duvall and Bill Abney.  Words cannot express the gratitude we have for the love and dedications of his caretakers.  Stephanie Cook-Hollis has been a part of the family for over 15 years caring for both Mark and Ernest, while Sweetie Cole, Velvet Rice and most recently Donna Anderson cared for Ernest.  We also acknowledge special longtime family friend Pearlene Rowl.  Special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Service and Sacrifice Harrison County at War Museum, Marshall Education Foundation or Trinity Episcopal School or Friendship Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
