Obituary

Ethel Marie Joaquin, 78, of Marshall, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2004, in Tyler, Texas. There will be a memorial at Downs Funeral Home in Marshall.

She was born on August 1, 1946, in Canyon, Texas, to Lee L. Johnson and Clementine Smith Johnson. Ethel spent her childhood in Canyon, often visiting Palo Duro Canyon, creating cherished memories with her parents and siblings.

For a time, Ethel lived in Oxford, Mississippi, before making Marshall, Texas, her home. She graduated from Judson School in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1965. In 1970, Ethel married Sarafim Joaquin in Marshall, where they built a life rooted in love, family, and friendship. Together, they raised two children, Sara (Joaquin) Odajima and Aaron Joaquin, in a home that was a true sanctuary for friends and family. Ethel's home was always open, becoming the gathering place where friends were welcome at any time.

Ethel is survived by her loving husband, Sarafim; her daughter Sara and son-in-law Samuel Odajima; her son Aaron Joaquin and daughter-in-law Alicia Wilson; five beloved grandchildren, Maddie, Ian, Ben, Julia, and Isaac; her sisters Ocoee Morgan and Margaret Sherrill; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends and family members who adored her. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Samuel Johnson.

In addition to brain teasers and word games, Ethel loved working puzzles with friends and family. Throughout her life, she exemplified kindness, hospitality, and devotion. Her home was a loving and welcoming environment, not just for her family but for everyone who entered. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the memories shared in her fun conversations and warm embrace.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ethel's memory to the charity of your choosing.
