Evelyn "Meme"
Sherman
Jan 10, 1928 — Jul 8, 2025
Diana
Evelyn Aline Sherman was born on January 10th, 1928, to Melvin Corbin Smith and Thelma Artimae Smith in Beaumont, Tx. She went home to be with Jesus July 8, 2025. At an early age she gave her life to Christ and modeled a Christian life for her kids and grandkids. She loved reading the Bible and hearing good preaching and would listen to her audio Bible when she could no longer see to read. She was a charter member of Bevil Oaks Baptist Church and later attended Harleton Baptist Church and Lone Oak Baptist Church. Evelyn married Claud James Sherman on June 12th, 1943, and was a war bride for a few years. They were happily married for 72 years and had five boys that they raised in Beaumont and Sour Lake. Claud was a welder while Evelyn was an exemplary homemaker who excelled at cooking, sewing, and hospitality. She worked a variety of jobs including several years as a professional seamstress.
Some of the joys in Evelyn's life included afternoon coffee with family and friends, a spirited 42 game, and quilt making. She gave quilts to many and even won some quilting awards. She was very affectionate and enjoyed spending time with all her grand, great, and great-great grandkids. She enjoyed her years traveling and singing with the Harletones Senior Adult choir. She had a special place in her heart for her beloved Houston Astros and the game of baseball, which started when her dad would take her to see the Beaumont Exporters.
She was the one of the last of her generation and was preceded in death by her parents, husband Claud, brother Herb, sisters Connie and Sue, nephew Corky, son Scott, and great-granddaughter Morgan. She is survived by her sons and daughters- in- law Herb and Pat Sherman of Diana, Thelma Sherman of Lufkin, Gary and Barbara Sherman of Center, Ron and Linda Sherman of Nederland, Melvin and Nancy Sherman of Ganado, and 10 grandkids, 27 great-grandkids, and 7 great-great grandkids.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that cared for her these last few years and the kind staff at Hospice of East Texas for their care during her final days.
