Funeral services for Mr. George William Gates, 85 of Marshall will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday July 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home with Tony Davis officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service. Interment will follow in Yates Memorial Gardens in Scottsville. Mr. Gates passed away July 11, 2011 in Marshall. George William Gates was born June 12, 1926 in Plain Field, New Jersey to John Gates and Virginia Johns Gates. On May 17, 1976 he married Susie Faye Richardson in Odessa, Texas. George served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. during W.W. II. He was a owner/ operator in the trucking industry and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. When he drove a truck over these 48 states and Canada, on each and every Sunday he stopped and went to church. Surviving George are his wife, Susie Richardson Gates of Marshall; daughter, Stephanie Dunlap of DeSoto, TX; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Stephen Fletcher and Raven Dunlap all of Dosoto, TX; two great-grandsons, Jared and Joshua Fletcher; sister, Gwendolyn Cooper of East Orange, New Jersey and one nephew, Eric Cooper. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Warren Gates. Serving as pallbearers will be Billy Anderson, Jamie Johnson, Archie Shaw, Stanley Richardson, L.O. Miles and Danny Crawford.
