Obituary

Emma Jean "Jeannie" Walsh was born in Marshall, Texas on November 13, 1942, to the late Elbert Gibson Hortman and Hazel Emma (Patty) Hortman. She departed this life in Marshall, Texas on October 16, 2023, at the age of eighty.

Jeannie was a 1961 graduate of Marshall High School and briefly attended Kilgore College. In early 1962, she applied for a job at the local Dairy Queen, and a young Richard "Mack" Walsh was working there. He convinced the owner to hire Jeannie, and he began offering to take her home after work in the evenings. Sometimes they would stop at Pit Grill and enjoy pecan waffles together.  Mack asked Jeannie to "go steady" with him, and she politely refused several times. Mack tried a different approach, asking Jeannie to marry him instead. She said yes, and they married on August 20, 1962, at Summit Methodist Church in Marshall.

Jeannie joined the Marshall post office as a part time rural mail carrier in the early 1980s, eventually moving to a full-time mail route. She retired in 2012 after more than 20 years of service. She was a beloved "mail lady" to many, and she cherished the sweet notes, cards, and gifts that the families along her route would leave for her in their mailboxes during the holidays.

Jeannie loved music (particularly hymns), collecting recipes, and cooking. She was a talented painter as well, creating beautiful hand painted ceramic Santas and artwork on clothing and wood.

Jeannie was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served as the pianist for over 20 years. Her beautiful and heartfelt music brought so much to the worship services in the church that she loved. Jeannie carried her Christian faith with her at all times, always willing to help someone in need or offer an encouraging word. Her quick wit also brought smiles to those around her.

Jeannie leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 61 years, Mack Walsh; three children - Rick Walsh (Terri), Randy Walsh, and Rachelle Daniel (Michael); 9 grandchildren -  Dustin Walsh, Victoria Walsh, Sydney Walsh, Jadin Britt, Kaitlyn Borchardt (Trent), Kyle Walsh, Riley Walsh, Malia Daniel, and Jelani Daniel; three great grandchildren – Nola Tucker, Rigel Burks, and Emelia Zapata; two brothers – James Hortman (Reyna) and Kenneth Hortman; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Hazel Hortman, and her brother, Leonard Hortman.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a sponsorship fund to pay for music lessons for those in her community, ensuring that her love and passion for music carries on. Memorial donations can be sent to the Jeannie Walsh Memorial Music Fund at Friendship Baptist Church, 1140 FM 1186, Marshall, TX 75672, or made online at https://myfriendshipbaptist.churchcenter.com/giving.
