Obituary

Jerene Jones Winocour was born at Marshall Memorial Hospital on October 31, 1928, to William Franklin Jones, Sr., of Marshall and Huldah Harrison, of Brownwood, Texas. She liked to joke that she was born "when the witches ride!" Jerene attended The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas, Bennington College in Vermont, the University of Texas at Austin, and the New School for Social Research, in New York City. She lived in Paris immediately after World War II, staying with a French family in the Place des Vosges; there she gained a lifelong affection for and knowledge of French language, culture, and history. Upon her return to New York City, she embarked upon a career in journalism, working as an art critic with Newsweek in the mid-1950s. She had a profound appreciation for abstract expressionism, cubism, and mid-twentieth century American art. In the early 1960s she married Jack Winocour. She and Jack moved to London, where she continued to live with her son Jonathan Winocour, after her husband's death. Upon her retirement from Time, Inc. in 1998, she returned to Marshall. During retirement, Jerene travelled to Russia and to China, fulfilling a lifetime ambition of visiting countries she was deeply interested in. Jerene was closely acquainted with interesting people all over the world, and she kept those friendships up through her last years. She is survived by her son Jonathan Winocour and his wife Kristina Russell, of Dallas, Texas, as well as their Airedale terriers, Sophie and Pitt, and her three cats. She also expects the following folks to get along without her: Terry Jones Bolger, of Mesquite, Texas, her husband Mark Bolger, and their son Bryan Bolger, William Franklin Jones, III, of Karnack, Texas, and his wife, Trish Jones, Cody Baldwin, Jack Brown, and Scott Baldwin, of Marshall, Texas and Lucile Lee Baldwin of Dallas, Texas, Mary Jane Sanders, of Marshall, Texas and her children Beth and Jess Moore, as well as their dog Margo, of Dallas, Texas, and Jack Sanders, Jr. and his wife Lynn, of Woodlawn, Texas, Becky and Bruce Clark, of Dallas, Texas, and their children, Jamie and Brad Chrisenberry, of Dallas, Texas, and their children, Sarah Harrison, her husband Tom Fair, and her daughter Belle Fair of Denver, Colorado, Pene Harrison, also of Denver, Preston & Robin Cloyd, of Houston, Texas, and the rest of the Cloyd family, Nancy and Tom Rohtert, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Gwynne Gray, of Marshall, Texas. Jerene was fiercely independent. She had an inimitable grace, and a profound compassion for human suffering. She was a donor to many literary and scientific causes, and though a self-professed secular humanist, she specifically asks that donations be made to a charity of YOUR choice. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Downs Funeral Home, Marshall, TX. A memorial service will be held in late April.
