Jerry was born on April 3, 1941, in Marshall, Texas and grew up in the Nesbitt Community. He attended Marshall Public Schools, and was a 1959 graduate of Marshall High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ainsworth on April 8, 1960, and they made their home in Marshall. He worked at the Darco Plant (now Cabot Norit) and retired from there after 38 years of service. He also served for a number of years in the Texas Army National Guard, and as a Reserve Deputy with the Harrison County Sheriff's Department for several years.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He grew up fishing Caddo Lake with his grandfather, and also enjoyed fishing for crappie and catfish on Lake O' the Pines. His favorite days involved camping with family and friends at Alley Creek Campground, and sitting around a roaring fire with them at the deer lease, entertaining with his many stories about adventures from his younger days. He also thoroughly enjoyed annual fishing trips to Venice, Louisiana these last several years. He was a wonderful cook, and made the best breakfasts while camping at the lake and at the deer lease. He also served as the cook at church events, youth camps and mission trips through the years.
