Memorial services for Joan Kirkland 89, of Marshall, Texas will be held at 3:00p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Downs Funeral Home. Joan passed away July 4, 2018 surrounded by family.

Joan was born on March 14, 1929 in Gilmer, Texas to the late Calvin Copeland and Kathryn Taylor. She married Russell Kirkland in August 1948, together they had 10 children. Mrs. Kirkland also had a son Buddy White from a previous marriage.

Mrs. Kirkland is survived by her children, Randy Kirkland (Donnie), Janis Loyd (Wayne), Cathy Pope, Babara Shultz (Danny), Jimmy Kirkland (Patti), Jo Ellen Kale (Raymond), Terry Kirkland, Paul Kirkland (Tracey); grandchildren, David Kirkland (Kelli), Donna Craig, Roger Kirkland, Dana Kirkland, Teresa Phillips (Michael), Tony Sisk (Abby), Tommie Harless (Chad), Todd Loyd (Shelli), Gwenda Pope, Mandy McConnell (Frankie), Michael Kirkland (Julie), Brian Baker (Angie), Nathan Shultz, Scott Kirkland, Justin Kirkland (Ashley), Josh Kirkland (Lauren), Shannon Ward, Kaylee Kirkland, Rusty Kirkland (Becky), Shauna Kirkland, Ronna Henigan (David), Hollie Upchurch, Kellie Prestidge. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and one special great-grandchild, Kolby Phillips.

Mrs. Kirkland is preceded in death by her parents; late husband, Bill Champion; step-son, Leonard Champion; two sons, Ronnie Kirkland, Jerry Kirkland; granddaughter, Chelsea Kirkland.

"Granny" loved spending time with grandkids, drinking coffee, playing cards, loving on her animals, and occasional trips to the casino.
