Obituary

John Edward Doss, age 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, October 20, 2025. A celebration of life service will be held at Downs Funeral Home Chapel, 4608 Elysian Fields Road, Marshall, Texas, on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 3 pm, with visitation to begin at 2:00 pm, prior to the service. Interment will be held following the service at Algoma Cemetery, 2380 Victory Drive, Marshall, Texas. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his devoted family, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

John was born in Linden, Texas, February 24,1940, to Cecil Doss and Myrtis Powell Doss. John grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1958. John then served in the United States Air Force. He enjoyed being stationed in Alaska and has shared many of his fondest memories regarding his service, with his children and grandchildren.

John met the love of his life, Karla Tate Doss, in the summer of 1963. They married on a snow covered day at Port Caddo Baptist Church, January 16, 1964. Together, John Edward and Karla raised two wonderful children, Michele Doss Simmons and Ricky Edward Doss. A devoted husband and father, John always made his family a priority. John made every effort to be at Ricky and Michele's activities, and was always up for a road trip or new adventure, with his family. John enjoyed introducing his bride, his children, and especially his grandchildren to the love of the outdoors. As a family, there are too many camping, hunting, and fishing trips to count. These are definitely some of Michele and Ricky's favorite memories, and for his grandchildren, too.

As the years passed, John and Karla made a beautiful lake home, together, at Caddo. This is the place where they worked diligently to make a place for family and friends and enjoyed priceless time together. John and Karla loved sitting on the porch, drinking coffee, and "Watching the river run by". John continued to enjoy time at the lake with family and friends until the very end.

John adored his grand kids and was thrilled to see his newest great grandson via facetime, just days before his passing. Haley Simmons Hastings, Benjamin Doss, and Rachel Doss were certainly the apple of his eye and adding two great grandchildren to his list was the icing on the cake.

John believed in God, the priority of family, and the good ol' USA. We are comforted to know that this is not goodbye, but see you later, as John is now at peace in his eternal home, with his Lord and Savior. John remained a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he and Karla were active for many years. John and Karla were blessed with a wonderful Sunday School class and enjoyed the fellowship of many good friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother O.B. Doss, and the love of his life, Karla Doss. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Michele and Romey Simmons, his son and daughter in law, Ricky and Kay Doss. Grandchildren: Haley Simmons Hastings and husband Stuart, Benjamin Doss, and Rachel Doss, Great Grandchildren: Hadley Hastings and Henry Hastings. John loved his extended family and thought the world of his nieces and many cousins.

A special thank you to the pallbearers; Benjamin Doss, Brennan Ferguson, Brady Born, Paul Marsh, John Ben Blackburn, and Scott Ford. Honorary pallbearers: JH Green, Manvel Green, Ronnie Green, Leland Marsh, Guy Marsh, Sean Sullivan, Brandon Born, and Stuart Hastings. The family is truly appreciative for the amazing support and kindness demonstrated by so many family and friends, and most recently Elite Home Health and HeartsWay Hospice, during his time of illness.
