Funeral services for John Michael Hortman, 55 of Scottsville will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the chapel of Downs Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Fitzgerald and Bro. Bennie Portwood officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the funeral home. John Michael Hortman passed away August 27, 2016 in Scottsville.

He was born in Harrison County, Texas on October 7, 1960 to John L. Hortman and Nancy Neal. John worked as a welding inspector in the pipeline industry. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and riding his motorcycle. He was also very good at training dogs and loved watching nature documentaries. John enjoyed being around people and enjoyed photography.

Surviving John are his daughter, Leslie Hortman of Fort Worth, TX; his mother, Nancy Bryant Sloan and husband James W. of Troup, TX; two sisters, Jayne L. Faulkner and husband Willie of Longview, TX and Tammy M. Hortman of Gladewater, TX; one brother, Allen D. Hortman and wife Sherry of Diana, TX; a very dear friend, Cheryl Kiser of Marshall and many other friends and family. Also surviving John are Jerry Berry, Dawn Lee and D'Etta Oney who were his second family.

He was preceded in death by his father John L. Hortman and Pat Berry.
