Jorene Keene Neel Graveside services for Jorene Keene Neel, 82, of Marshall were held Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Yates Memorial Cemetery in Scottsville with Dr. Jerry Bawcom officiating. Mrs. Neel passed away February 14, 2013 in Marshall. Jorene Keene Neel was born January 3, 1931 in Clauene, Texas to her parents George Culby Keene and Marie Messik Keene. While studying at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Jorene met W.A. "Sonny" Neel. They were married on July 9, 1951 in Levelland, Texas, and were happily married for 61 years until Sonny's death a month ago. Son Art was born while Sonny and Jorene tried cotton farming in Hurlwood, Texas. After a year of West Texas sandstorms and hailstorms, Sonny returned to work for Brown and Root and was temporarily diverted from a foreign posting in 1958 to help with the building of defense facilities at Thiokol. Sonny and Jorene never left Marshall where son Russell was born. Jorene was co-owner of the W.A. Neel Co. Inc. with her husband and two sons. She actively participated in the operation of the family businesses. Her passion was her family and all of her pets. She loved all animals eagerly taking in any that showed up at her door. Her two cats Smoky and Little Bit were her constant companions. Jorene is survived by her sister, Vicky Sue Bawcom and husband Jerry of Belton, TX; niece, Amy Marie Bawcom of Belton, TX; sons, Russell Keene Neel and Art Neel and wife Cheryl, all of Marshall. Jorene was preceded in death by her parents George and Marie Keene and her husband Sonny Neel. The family wishes to thank the Marshall Fire Department and EMS and Good Shepherd Medical Center ER Staff for their care of Mrs. Neel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a favorite charity or the local humane society.
