Obituary

Karla Tate Doss, age 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior July 24, 2023. A celebration of life service will be held at Downs Funeral Home Chapel, 4608 Elysian Fields Road, Marshall, Texas, on Saturday, July 29, 2023, with visitation to begin at 10 am, prior to the service. Interment will be held following the service at Algoma Cemetery, 2380 Victory Drive, Marshall, Texas. Karla passed away peacefully, following a brief illness, surrounded by her devoted family.

Karla was born in Carthage, Texas, November 18,1942, to Preston Allen Tate and Gertie Hinton Tate. Karla grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1961. Karla met the love of her life, John Edward Doss, in the summer of 1963 and they married on a snow-covered day, in East Texas, January 16, 1964. Together, Karla and John Edward raised two wonderful children, Michele Doss Simmons and Ricky Edward Doss. A devoted wife and mother, Karla also enjoyed a career. She worked as a legal secretary for Bill Dorsett, Attorney at Law, before beginning her tenure with the United States Federal Courthouse in Marshall. Karla enjoyed her 20 plus years working for Judge Sam B. Hall and sharing an office with Peggy Anderson, who became one of her closest friends. Although Karla worked outside the home, she did her best to attend every ball game and event for Michele and Ricky. Karla and John Edward loved spending time together as a family, camping, traveling, hunting, and fishing. Since retirement, the two have enjoyed doting on their grandchildren, Haley Simmons Hastings, Benjamin Doss and Rachel Doss. Spending time at Caddo Lake, drinking coffee, and "watching the river run by", and of course, her weekly lady's luncheon, with a competitive game of cards, was definitely a favorite pastime. Faith, family, and friends were important to Karla. She and John Edward made it a priority to worship together as members of Immanuel Baptist Church of Marshall. They were blessed with a wonderful Sunday School class and enjoyed the fellowship of many good friends.

Karla was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brothers, Buel Tate and Winston Tate, and sister Loeta Tate Sample.

She is survived by her devoted sweetheart of 59 years, John Edward Doss; her daughter, Michele Simmons and husband Romey; her son Ricky Doss and wife, Kay; grandchildren, Haley Simmons Hastings and husband Stuart, Benjamin Doss, and Rachel Doss and numerous special nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the pallbearers; Benjamin Doss, Stuart Hastings, Brennan Ferguson, Brady Born, Brandon Born, and Jerry Smith.

The family is truly appreciative for the amazing support of many family and friends and most recently HeartsWay Hospice, during her recent illness.
