A funeral service for Larry Don Jones, 83, of Longview, Texas will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 30, 2022, in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home in Marshall, Texas. Interment will follow at Center Cemetery in Harleton, Texas. A time for visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the funeral home.
He was born on November 14, 1938, to Ennis and Lois Jones in James, Texas and passed away on January 25, 2022, at his home in Longview, Texas.
He attended Diana High School, where he was known as quite the athlete. He was quarterback of the football team, center on the basketball court, and catcher on the baseball field. He attended Kilgore College for one year before making the decision to enlist in the military, but not before marrying the love of his life, Jackie on May 23, 1959.
He and Jackie had 2 children and lived the military life for 20 years, some of which were spent apart while he was stationed abroad. As a family, they moved around a lot, spending time in San Antonio, Texas, Altus, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Nebraska and where they finally called home, Hallsville, Texas. He was classified as Master Sargent in the Airforce and after 20 years, gained his retirement. He continued to serve the government in the U.S. Postal Service for 10 more years until full retirement could be reached.
He was very passionate about music. He taught himself to play the guitar by ear, as he couldn't read music. He went on to play lead guitar in a band with his wife, and later taught himself to play the piano. He was also passionate about golf. He spent many hours on the golf course with his son, Jimmy Don and his brother-in-law, Don Orchard.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, his only sibling, Mable Jean Davidson, and his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline Delores Jones.
He is survived by his son, Jimmy Don Jones and wife, Wendy and his daughter, Karen Jones Wehring; grandsons, James and Justin Jones, Jeremy Wehring and Blake Duncan; granddaughters, Kathryn Wehring Bull and husband, Jimmy, Laynie Jones, Sarah Wehring Simms and husband, Jeremy, and Neely Duncan, all lovingly referring to him, not as granddaddy, but Dodaddy. He was Great-Dodaddy to Ryleigh, Hudson, Beau, Jayden and Judson.
He fought the good fight. He served his country, his family, and most importantly, his Lord with love and faithfulness. Those left behind will miss him but are comforted with the knowledge of where he sits today.
