Obituary

Shirley Laverne Irvine Cundiff entered into the presence of the Lord on January, 24, 2025. Born to William Ray and Estelle Pryne Irvine in Marshall, Texas, on June 26, 1933, Laverne, as she preferred to be called, enjoyed a rich and full life with her devoted husband of 71 years,  Samuel R. (Sam) Cundiff.

Laverne worked in the public for many years, beginning as a bookkeeper for Buck Hill Used Cars on East Grand Ave., and she also worked as receptionist/bookkeeper for Dr. James Blackburn's medical practice for 29 years.  Still, she found time to be a good mom at home, teaching her children to love and serve the Lord. She also enjoyed traveling, and in her later life she was able to travel to Mexico, Brazil, Europe, and every U.S. state except North Dakota.

Laverne loved serving others, and she especially enjoyed working with the children in her church. God, her family, and her church—in that order— were her world. She taught Sunday School and Children's Church and hosted ladies' prayer meetings in her home for many years. "Brother and Sister Cundiff" served faithfully for years, giving rides to and from church for both children and adults who had no transportation. Her time and finances, cheerfully given to others, impacted the lives of many over the years.

Laverne is survived by her spouse, Samuel R. Cundiff and four children: Sheryl Cundiff Morphew and spouse Roy, Broken Arrow, OK; Stephen Ray Cundiff and spouse René, Avinger, TX; Shirley Cundiff Manuel and spouse Jeff, Madill, OK; and Stanley Scott Cundiff and spouse Merrily, Málaga, Spain. She is remembered as "Grandma" to Carrie, Stacy, Eric, Kyle, Jennifer, Jeffery, Stephanie, Rachel, Scott, Sarah, and Nick; and "Great Grandma" to Payton, Luke, Boone, Michael, Gabriella, Tori, and Jess.

Services for Laverne Cundiff are set for Friday, January 31, 2025, at First Assembly of God, 400 S. Lafayette, Marshall, TX, at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverends Micheal Richard and Jeff Manuel officiating. A graveside service will immediately follow at Algoma South Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Downs Funeral Home. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall of the church following the graveside service.

The family would like to express gratitude to the administration and staff of Marshall Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, as well as to Concho Hearts Hospice of Kilgore for the good care provided to our loved one during the past couple of years.
