Obituary

Lena Ruth was born in Terry county Texas, September 17, 1932. She was one of 13 children. Lena attended school in Brownfield.

Lena Ruth spent her formative years working in the fields processing crops during the summer and going to school through the winter months. She graduated from Brownfield high school and worked in town to save money so that she could go to college. She went to Bethany College in Oklahoma City for one year where she took courses in nursing. She was quite the athlete and at one time she held the school record for most points scored in a basketball game.

After one year of college Lena Ruth moved to Andrews Texas. She worked in a restaurant and played city league softball where she met a young man named John Henry Scasta. He would eat at the restaurant and go to her softball games to watch her play ball.

She and John were married on August 17, 1952. They bought a camper and lived in it as they moved around west Texas with John's job. During this time of travel they had two children, Joan Renae, and John Delwyn. Traveling and living in a camper with two kids became a struggle so they began to look for a place to settle and decided on Marshall. After they moved to Marshall they found land in Woodlawn and built their home. They had one more child Ronald Morris in 1959.

Lena Ruth was very involved in the community. She and John worked with and led the local 4H group for many years while their children were young. They were involved in the church of the Nazarene in Marshall, Texas for the next 50 years of their life. They served the church in many different roles. Lena Ruth had a special calling to work with kids. She attended college and earned a teaching degree. She taught at Marshall ISD and served for 20 years influencing the lives of many children. She wanted to be the best teacher she could be, so she went back to college and earned her master's degree in education. She used her skills to teach children in school as well as in church. Lena Ruth drove the church van for many years until the insurance wouldn't cover her driving anymore when she turned 75 years young. This really bothered her but she accepted it and went on with life.

Just as Lena Ruth and John started out in a camper they never lost the love of travel. When they retired they traveled around North America including many U.S. States, Alaska, and Canada, seeing everything they could. They traveled with a group of friends that were retired and would travel for 6 weeks in the spring and 6 weeks in the fall.

Lena Ruth was quite the seamstress. She made clothes for all of her children when they were young. As she and John's travelling slowed down she started making quilts. It is quite the honor to have one of Lena Ruth's' quilts.

Lena Ruth is survived by her husband John Scasta, three children and their spouses: Renae and Doug Lynde, Delwyn and Becky Ann Scasta, and Ronny and Becky Lee Scasta, eight grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and 1 double great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents and precious brothers and sisters. She is survived by her beloved brothers, Roy, Claude and Lee Cypert.
