Obituary

Richard "Mack" Walsh Sr., born October 5, 1937, in Winnsboro, Texas, to the late Rufus Marvin Walsh and Laura Elizabeth (McMullen) Walsh, passed away in Longview, Texas, on September 2, 2025, at the age of 87.

Mack entered the world under less-than-ideal circumstances—a premature home birth in rural Texas during the waning years of the Great Depression. He defied the odds, kept warm in an oven during those fragile early days. Family often joked that his brain got a little "fried" in the process, which they lovingly blamed for his lifelong streak of stubbornness. What's certain is that Mack began life with a resilient spirit and an uncanny ability to repurpose anything others might discard.

A 1957 graduate of Marshall High School, Mack began working at Dairy Queen while still a student. Legend has it he occasionally skipped school for adventures with friends and family—including flying planes with his boss, Rex Pickens.

In early 1962, a beautiful brunette named Jeannie joined the DQ team, unaware she'd be working—and living—alongside Mack for the next 61 years. It started with rides home and pecan waffles at Pit Grill. When Jeannie repeatedly declined to "go steady," Mack took a different approach and proposed instead. She said yes, despite her father's offer to send her to beauty school and build her a salon if she didn't marry Mack. Love won out, and they were married on August 20, 1962, at Summit Methodist Church in Marshall. Over time, especially after grandchildren arrived, Mr. Hortman and Mack forged a loving bond and mutual respect.

In 1969, Mack became co-owner of the newly built Dairy Queen at 409 E Grand Avenue, constructed by Hortman Construction Company—his father-in-law's firm. By 1980, Mack had bought out his partner and became sole owner, running the business with his family for the next 18 years. Jeannie and his oldest son, Rick, were his faithful partners in this endeavor.

Mack had many hobbies: crossword puzzles, growing vegetables from seeds, cheering on the Texas Rangers, and driving his tractor. He raised cows and relished southern staples like peas and cornbread with sliced tomatoes, banana-pineapple pudding, and peaches. He was a daily newspaper reader, an avid Fox News viewer, and a spirited debater—especially regarding politics with his liberal daughter, who did her best to dodge those conversations.

A devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church since 1989, Mack served faithfully as a deacon.

He was one of a kind, as any of his family members can attest to. He leaves behind his children Rick Walsh (Terri) and Rachelle Daniel (Michael); grandchildren: Dustin Walsh (Tasha), Victoria Walsh (Landrian), Sydney Walsh, Jadin Britt, Kaitlyn Borchardt (Trent), Kyle Walsh, Riley Walsh, Malia Burks (Drey), and Jelani Daniel; great-grandchildren: Nola Tucker, Rigel Burks, Emilia Zapata, and Ezra Burks; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Laura McMullen; his sister, Mary McMullen Ammonette; his beloved wife, Jeannie; and his cherished son, Randy.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Jeannie Walsh Memorial Music Fund at Friendship Baptist Church. Contributions may be sent to 1140 FM 1186, Marshall, TX 75672, or made online at https://myfriendshipbaptist.churchcenter.com/giving.
