She grew up with her 3 siblings in the Oxford, North Carolina Masonic Home. She graduated from the Watts Hospital School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina, as a registered nurse in 1944, whereupon she joined the Army Nurse Corp as a lieutenant during WWII and served two years in the Philippines and Japan where she met and married her husband, Jack V. She was an active member of the Marshall community and her church for 38 years. She volunteered her time to numerous charitable organizations and church activities, such as the Pink Ladies at Marshall Regional, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Vacation Bible School, and she was a regular fixture at area nursing homes offering comfort, company, and a warm smile to those who needed it most.
