Obituary

MERTIE BELLAMY BALDWIN Mertie Bellamy Baldwin died peacefully on July 2, 2012. She was born August 31, 1926 in Marshall, Texas to Claude and Ola Pickens Bellamy. She was married to her loving husband Judge Phillip B. Baldwin on July 2, 1948. Judge Baldwin died in 2002. Mertie will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, giving spirit, and inexhaustible energy. She was active in many volunteer endeavors. She taught Sunday School at the Trinity Episcopal Church for many years; she was active in PTA for all of her children's schools, including one year as PTA president; she was a Camp Fire Girl leader; and she was a room mother for the schools for nearly 30 years. Mertie was a charter member of the Marshall Symphony League. One of Mertie's greatest enthusiasms was politics. She assisted her husband, Phillip in several winning campaigns, and together they ran the Harrison County campaign headquarters for the Kennedy-Johnson election, and later the campaign in east Texas for the Johnson-Humphrey ticket. After the election, Mertie and Phillip had the opportunity to attend several State Dinners at the White House. Eventually, Phillip was appointed to a federal judgeship in Washington, D.C. and they moved the family to Northern Virginia. Mertie and Phillip were good friends of President and Mrs. Johnson, and Lady Bird and Mertie regularly corresponded in the years after the White House. The Christmas after Mrs. Johnson's death, her daughters, Lynda and Luci, sent Mertie one of Lady Bird's favorite silk scarves as a remembrance. Mertie is survived by her children Becky and Bruce Clark of Dallas, Texas; Nancy Baldwin and Tom Rohtert of Heiskell, Tennessee; Janie and Brad Chrisenberry of Dallas, Texas; and Phillip Baldwin, Jr. of Marshall, Texas. Mertie also felt herself blessed by her grandchildren, Kathryn and David Parker of Silver Spring, Maryland, Laura and Eric VanLeeuen of Dallas, Texas, William Clark of Lubbock, Texas, Phillip Baldwin, III, Andrew Baldwin, and John Baldwin, all of Marshall, and Sarah Chrisenberry of Dallas, Texas. Mertie is also survived by her sisters Ann Taylor of Marshall, Jackie Daniel of Corpus Christi, Texas, and by sister-in-law Cody Baldwin, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary Jane and Jack Sanders all of Marshall; and many nieces and nephews including Kent Taylor, Jack Sanders, Jr., Scott Baldwin, Jr., and Jack Baldwin all of Marshall; Debi and Gary Trammell and Julie and Chuck Kirkham of Corpus Christi, Texas, Beth and Jess Moore of Houston, Texas, Lee Baldwin of Dallas, Texas, and Kim and Roland Harvey of Nacogdoches, Texas. Services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall, Texas at 10 am Friday July 6, 2012 with Father John Himes officiating. Interment will follow in Scottsville Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718 or mda.org.
