Obituary

Doris Nann Mercer Chandler died on March 7, 2026. She was always known as Nann, the name she preferred and by which she was loved.

Nann was born on October 11, 1932, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Charles and Olive Mercer. She had one brother, Charles E. Mercer Jr., who preceded her in death, as did her beloved sister-in-law, Mildred Mercer.

She is survived by her husband of 71 1/2 years, Mark E. Chandler, and by her two daughters, Jann Butler (Steve) of Longview, TX and Stacy Price (Kevin) of Coppell, TX., and son-in-law, Bernard Kelleher. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Julie Kelleher of Virginia Beach, VA. Nann is also survived by six grandchildren, Wayne, Vanessa, Caroline, Bern, Zach, and Chase, four great-grandchildren, and extended family members.

Nann attended elementary and junior high school in Shreveport and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1950. She graduated from Louisiana State University in 1954 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education for the elementary level. She taught elementary school in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. During this time, she returned to LSU to obtain additional certification for the high school level.

After several years in the classroom, Nann stepped away from teaching to be home when her daughters returned from school—a choice that reflected her deep devotion to family. Once her girls were older, she joined the Child Nurture Center at Ridgeview Presbyterian Church in Dallas as a teacher to the 4-year-old class. This position allowed her to continue balancing work and family life. She remained at Ridgeview for 22 years before retiring.

Nann was an all-around, well-liked, and well-respected person. Her strongest qualities were her love and loyalty—to her family, her friends, and her faith. A devoted Christian woman, she consistently supported and strengthened her church community. She enjoyed her monthly bridge groups, both the married couple's and women's groups. She did not let her fear of flying keep her grounded. She traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, Europe and visited Julie in Abu Dhabi. A side trip to Ephesus, Turkey fulfilled a lifetime dream of walking in the footsteps of Paul. Nann also traveled with her girls visiting multiple US states, cruised the Caribbean and the northeastern seaboard into Canada. She passed on her love of travel and adventure to all three of her daughters.

Her love of family extended far beyond her immediate household. She faithfully attended the annual Mother's Day reunions at Scottsville Cemetery and the First Cousins' Reunions in Marshall, Texas, for more than 40 years—often being the last to leave. That enduring love continues to be reflected in her daughters' lives.

Nann's warmth and attentiveness allowed her to form and maintain lifelong friendships. She made sure the people in her life knew they were valued, and she carried that care with her always.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the Choice caregivers at Arabella and Choice hospice for their devotion in caring for mom for many years. We also appreciate the services from Jackie Mitchell as her private caregiver.

A graveside service for the family will be held at the Scottsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Nann Chandler's name to the Alzheimer's research center at ALZ.org.
