Obituary

Dr. R. Orin Littlejohn went to be with The Lord on March 3, 2014. Dr. Littlejohn was an active contributor to the medical, spiritual, political, and community life of Marshall, TX for most of his 83 years of life, and served his country with distinction through military service as well. Born in 1930 to Dr. Frank S. Littlejohn and Lucile Crouch Littlejohn, Orin graduated Marshall High School and first attended North Texas State College where he met Alice Jane Boulter whom he married in 1952. He later attended the University of Texas at Austin before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and serving as a fighter pilot and flight instructor in the US during the Korean War era. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Orin completed his bachelor's studies at Stephen F. Austin State College and went on to earn his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical School and complete an internship in general practice at Methodist Hospital in Dallas. He then became a partner in his father's medical practice in Marshall where he practiced medicine for 44 years before retiring in 2005. During his professional life, he served as Chief of Staff and President of the Marshall Memorial Hospital Board and for 43 years as college physician for East Texas Baptist College/University. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practitioners, and a member of the Board of Councilors for the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Littlejohn remained current in advances in Family Practice Medicine, and continued a limited practice well after retirement. "Dr. Orin's" professional passion was always for his patients, many of whom shared his deep sense of Christian devotion, and colleagues and medical staff alike often found him to be a willing teacher and mentor in the ways of compassionate patient care and in the culture of the Marshall medical community. Another passion was evident in his spiritual life and church involvement. Dr. and Mrs. Littlejohn's lives were dramatically changed during the First Presbyterian Church and Marshall City-wide Festivals of Faith in the early 1970s. Orin served on numerous lay renewal teams to churches across the South with the Covenant Fellowship of Presbyterians, and was instrumental in the founding of Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Marshall in 1985. Over the years his considerable Christian leadership was demonstrated through his service as Elder at EPC, Marshall, President of Marshall Prayer Force, board member for Prayer Life Seminars, and Moderator for the 24th General Assembly of the National Evangelical Presbyterian Church. An active member of the Republican Party, Orin partnered with long-time special friend Major General Vernon Lewis on publication of the Lone Star Eagle newspaper when it proudly flew over the communities of East Texas. His extensive community involvement included the Citizens Advisory Board, the Board of Directors for the Marshall National Bank, and Rotary International as a third-generation member of the Marshall Rotary Club. Orin developed a love for the outdoors, for water sports and for horsemanship at his Aunt Mag's Camp Fern, and was always a voracious reader of everything from medical journals to adventure novels with a particular love for the Bible, which he and Jane read and memorized together each morning. Through life he enjoyed boating, fishing, water-skiing, domestic and international travel, oil painting and, in recent years, time spent with his faithful Yorkie Gideon. Orin and Jane Littlejohn were married for 62 years and are predeceased by a stillborn baby boy and Orin's brother Frank S. Littlejohn, Jr. Orin is survived by son Dr. Robert O. Littlejohn, Jr, daughter Eleeza Littlejohn Rex, daughter in-law Teresa Littlejohn, son in-law Robert H. Rex, by his grandchildren and their spouses David and Mia Littlejohn, Katelyn and Nathaniel Kirnie, Logan Rex, Parker Rex, Katherine and Patrick Hely, Jason Rex, Robert Rex, and Alison Rex, by great granddaughter Emaline Kirnie, and by many beloved extended family members. The family acknowledges with special gratitude Dr. Steve Crayton, Chief Reginald Cooper, and Battalion Chief Bob Cole for extraordinary medical and EMS services, and the entire EPC family and the whole body of Christ in Marshall and beyond for their prayer support and encouragement during these special final days. A memorial service will be held at Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Marshall, TX at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Pall Bearers for the service will be Jim Bates, Ron Hall, Charlie Parker, Vernon Lewis, Bill Mills, Don Spencer, Wendell Jones and Hillard Strong. Orin's first cousin Bill Sullivan, Jr. will serve as Honorary Pall Bearer. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Marshall or to the charity of your choice.
