Robert M.
Griffin
Aug 22, 1927 — May 26, 2020
Robert M. Griffin, 92, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Robert was born weighing almost two pounds on August 22, 1927 to M.N. Griffin and Bertha Beggs Griffin in Earlsboro, Oklahoma. Later they moved to Naples, Texas where they owned and operated Save-A-Dime Grocery. Robert played basketball for the Buffaloes and graduated from Naples High School in 1945. He was nicknamed "Poogie" in his early school days and the name followed him throughout his life. He served his country from 1945-1947 in the United States Army occupational forces in Korea. When he returned home, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Murl Robinson, in August 1947. They soon moved to Atlanta, Texas where they began their lives together welcoming three children. They were members at West Side Baptist Church in Atlanta. Robert worked at Grogan's Lumber Yard, then Day & Zimmerman in Texarkana, Texas. In 1959, he began his employment with Thiokol LAAP in Karnack, Texas. He worked as a security guard and was promoted to Guard Sergeant during his 27 year tenure. Robert received special recognition for the redesign and development of the security lock and key control system for the entire plant, and was highly respected in his field. He retired in 1986. They were members of First Baptist Church in Karnack where Robert served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. After living in Karnack for a few years, they built the family home along Hwy 43. It was complete with a large vegetable garden which he and his wife spent many seasons growing fresh vegetables, not only for their family, but were also happy to share with neighbors. Many evenings were spent in lawn chairs, sipping sweet tea, watching the bluebirds, waving to passing cars, and welcoming friends who pulled into the driveway. In 1981, they joined Central Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas and enjoyed meeting new friends and traveling with the Senior Adults. Robert also cared for his Mother several years during this time. In 1995, the unimaginable happened when he lost his wife of 48 years. During her nine year illness, Robert was constantly by her side caring for her and living out the marriage vows he had promised. Later in life Robert began making bluebird houses and gave them to family and friends. He also enjoyed baking either pecan or English walnut pies to share. One year he baked 140 pies to give away, mostly to make someone happy and to get a friendly hug. In November of 2017 he decided to move to Hallsville to live with his daughter. He was welcomed with open arms by Terri and family friend Donna. They spent their time together either playing dominoes, sitting on the back patio surrounded by colorful plants and flowers, enjoying catfish dinners, listening to his favorite music or watching his favorite show, Hogan's Heroes.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Murl Griffin. He is survived by his two sons Rick Griffin and wife Cindy, Kirvin Griffin and wife Beckie, daughter Terri Griffin, and Donna Page lovingly referred to by Robert as "daughter #2". Grandchildren are Brian Griffin and wife Christy, Jacob Griffin, Katrina Griffin, and one great grandson Saxxan Griffin. Robert will be remembered by many cherished life long family friends.
In lieu of floral tributes, the family suggests that donations be made to the Senior Adult Homebound Ministry of Central Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas or to Heartsway Hospice of Marshall, Texas.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
