Obituary

A memorial service for Shane Ray Matlock, 60, of Marshall, Texas will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, May 9, 2026, in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel.

Shane was born on June 1, 1965, in Pasadena, Texas to Paul Ray Matlock and Virginia Lee Crouch Matlock and passed away on May 4, 2026, in Longview, Texas.

He was a colorful man to say the least. When he wasn't sitting around whittling on sticks for no apparent reason, he would be using a piece of sandpaper to take off his fingerprints. He wasn't about to let the DMV get a print from him nor was the government ever going to catch up with him for some random well thought out crime that he hadn't even committed yet.

He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, but most of all he loved his collection of guns and knives. If he wasn't piddling in the yard, you could find him sitting and watching YouTube videos for hours on end. He was always trying to learn new things. He was not only smart, but he also sported a very colorful personality. He was known for having a wealth of useless information. If he didn't know something, he would make up a lie to make you believe it, and in turn, he would believe it himself wholeheartedly. He was always right whether he was wrong or not and was not afraid to give his opinion on the matter. His motto was "never let a lie get in the way of a good story!"

The river bottom was his favorite place to be. He would often stay after dark just listening and pondering on the things you could hear but couldn't see in the dark. Things that you just could not explain. He was a firm believer in "Big Foot." He could also be considered a conspiracy theorist, and of course he believed that the world was flat. He was amazed by his stories and would even surprise himself at times. He had a great love for his wife and grandkids. He loved all of his family, sometimes even more than his dogs. He loved all animals in general and could even be considered somewhat of an animal whisperer. There was always a little bit of truth in every joke, and he was a joy to be around.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Ray Matlock; mother, Virginia Whaley; stepfathers, Merle Ray Thomas and Raymond Whaley and good friends, Carroll Chapman and D.W. Robertson.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine Matlock; children, Kaitlyn Reynolds and husband, Thomas, Monty Ray Matlock and wife, Emily Vargas and Maxwell Shane Matlock; sister, Tracy Matlock; grandchildren, Trey Reynolds and Kaylee Grace Reynolds and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Shane was loved by all and will be missed dearly.
