Obituary

Sylvia McKay Chastain Sylvia McKay Chastain went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Sylvia was born November 4, 1937 to Gilchrist and Sara Chambers McKay in Shreveport, LA. Raised in Marshall with her sister, Sara Ann, she graduated from Marshall High in 1956. She went on to attend nursing school at Scott & White in Temple, TX. She completed her R.N. in 1959. Sylvia began her nursing career later that same year in Houston, TX under the guidance of renowned cardiologists Drs. Michael E. DeBakey and Red Duke. Moving back to Marshall in the late 1960s, she met her best friend of 47 years, Kathleen Clark, while working for Dr. Sam Tenney. She went on to serve several years as the Harrison County Health Department nurse. On November 28, 1969, she married her husband of 42 years Bill and instantly became the mother of 3 children, Roy, Barbara, and Janis. She loved these children as her own, as that was her way. This new family welcomed daughter Christy in December 1972 and youngest son Joe in April 1980. With a full house of kids and pets, there was never a dull moment, and Sylvia wouldn't have lived life any other way. There was always a steady stream of friends and neighbors, and she was always the gracious host. She never forgot a face and made fast friends of any stranger she met. A faithful member of the First Presbyterian and later the Evangelical Presbyterian Churches of Marshall, Sylvia was a true light in the darkness by opening her heart and her home anytime it was needed and always before it was even asked. Gran C. leaves behind a legacy of love in her children, blooded and self-adopted, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and neighbors. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and sister, brother-in-law M.L. Dreyer, daughter Barbara, and cousin James Davis. She is survived by husband Bill, son Roy Chastain and grandson Cody, great-grandchildren Aubrey and Willie of Marshall, TX; daughter Janis Hemli of Lakeland, FL, and grandsons Jack & Rusty; daughter Christy and husband Damon Erpelding of Little Elm, TX; son Joe, wife Maigen, and granddaughter, Kierstyn, of Marshall, TX; multiple self-adopted sons, daughters, and grandchildren, numerous relatives, and many, many friends. Her life and love will be celebrated in a service on Monday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, May 12, from 6-8 p.m. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service at New Grover Cemetery in Marshall. Pallbearers are Jack Hemli, Allen Clark, Bill Parrish, Bill Barton, Bill Mills, and Cody Chastain. Honorary pall bearers are the members of the Session at EPC of Marshall.
