He joined the U.S. Army National Guard in October 1964 and served both in the U.S. and Texas National Guard until 1970. Tommie was known affectionately as "Coach Tommie" to scores of Chris's and Tony's friends who love and respect him. He had a passion for golf, where he could often be found at Oaklawn Country Club (now Marshall Municipal Course). As an avid outdoorsman, he spent hours on Caddo Lake bass fishing and trot lining for catfish as well as having a life-long obsession hunting whitetail deer at Marshall Hunting Club. To his buddies, he was known as "Stumpjumper" or "Stump". To his five grandchildren that he adored, he was simply "Poppy."
