Obituary

Velma Doris Plunkett Mitchell, 94, of Marshall, Texas, peacefully left our world on February 22, 2025. Velma, lovingly known as "Tang" was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi on September 14, 1930, to Luther and Odessa Plunkett. She was the second of five children and accepted Christ at an early age.

Velma graduated high school from Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1949. She married John D. Green in 1950 and from that union, two children were born. Cedric Green was born in 1951, but sadly passed shortly after birth, and Reginald S. Green was born in 1952. In 1962, Velma and Reginald moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue other opportunities for herself and her son and she finally settled in Marshall, Texas in 1974.

Velma never shied away from hard work. She was employed in customer service for over 50 years and retired from JC Penney catalog department in the Marshall Mall. When she was not working, she attended church and volunteered regularly and in her later years became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church.

As the family historian, Velma had a great memory and was a wonderful storyteller. She treasured phone calls with family members and was never one to hold her tongue. Among her many skills, her baking and sewing skills were unmatched. Many family members and friends requested her seamstress services, especially for special occasions, and her handmade gowns and bridesmaid dresses never disappointed. Her amazing cakes, cookies and pies happily expanded many waistlines.

People in the community rarely saw her without her sister and best friend, Willella "Baye" Plunkett. The two were inseparable and never hesitated to travel to visit family and friends. Velma treasured her time with family, especially her great grandchildren. She loved being their "She-she," never failing to attend their milestones and graduations.

Only age could slow her down. She was very active until she was no longer physically able. She was cared for by her son and devoted daughter-in-law until she left to be with the Lord.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Odessa Plunkett, brothers Edward and Steve Plunkett, sister Alfreida Plunkett, son Cedric Green and granddaughter Sonya Fisher. She is survived by her son Reginald S. Green, daughter-in-law Linda Green, sister Willella Plunkett, granddaughter Sherice Williams (Billie Williams), grandsons Reginald L. Green (Naomi Green) and Reginald S. Green, Jr., great grandchildren Destiny Williams, Angel Williams, Darius Williams, Alexander Green, Gabrielle Green, Kierre Williams, Khyree Williams, Kwestin Williams and Kaylen Fisher; four great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
