Marshall
A memorial service for William Francis Spurr, Jr., 70, of Marshall, Texas will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2025, in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
William "Bill" Francis Spurr, Jr. passed away on October 3rd, entering his Heavenly home. He was born on September 5, 1955, in Alexandria, VA to Bill and Phyllis Spurr. He graduated from Hayfield Secondary School in 1973, where he was a proud member of the wrestling team. Following high school, he pursued his education at Bethel College in McKenzie, TN, where he also played baseball. After graduating in 1977, Bill began his teaching career in Tennessee before relocating to Marshall, TX, in 1979. Bill dedicated 31 years to Marshall ISD, teaching physical education and driver's education, and coaching various sports teams. He retired in 2010 due to the difficulty of working with Huntington's Disease as it started to progress. Bill also worked for the ARC with Special Olympics and worked part-time at Morning Light in the men's group home and day hab.
In 1981, Bill married Pamela Lane. She remained by his side faithfully caring for him as his Huntington's progressed.
Throughout his time in Marshall, Bill was an active member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Cypress Valley Bible Church, where he served in different roles, including the Awanas Children's Program, Youth Groups, and the church choir at Cumberland. Due to being homebound for many years, Bill cherished his monthly card games with long time friends David Dean, Rusty Rustenhaven, and John and Becky Lindsay.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bobby Spurr and Gary Spurr, and nephew Michael Spurr. Bill is survived by his wife Pam, children Natalie (Andy) Rogers, Haley (Casey) Murch, Robbie (Kacie) Spurr, grandchildren, Mercer and Larkin Rogers; Eliana, Addilyn, and Micah Murch; Jensen and Maverick Spurr, sister Cindy Fritzinger, sisters-in-law Teresa Spurr, Annie Spurr, Melissa (Rick) Terrill, Mandy Lane, brother-in-law Bobby Lane and nieces, nephews, aunts and other relatives and friends.
The family extends their gratitude to caregivers Tina Smith, Jessica Langer, and Maddy Ferem, as well as Chambers Hospice including Nurse Brittany and Aides Mercedes and Nova for their exceptional care.
